Hi Everyone! I have still gotten multiple questions & comments regarding how I made the chalkboard so I wanted to post an updated, simple tutorial as to how I made it.
Went to local Goodwill looking for an old picture.You'll want something that has a solid wood frame AND a wood backing (some are cardboard). Make sure that you can easily remove the backing/picture from the frame itself & make sure that the entire thing seems sturdy.
You can see in the before picture, I found this picture of the ocean. The painting was held together by bendable staples, so we opened them all up and took apart the three pieces - the frame, which we painted white, the wood backing, which we painted with chalkboard paint & the painting paper itself, which got tossed in the trash.
I used spray chalkboard paint when I initially did this - but have since repainted it with this much better Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Paint
from a can. It goes on thicker & is much more durable. Then we just put the chalkboard backing back into the frame, tightened up all of the staples and BOOM... you have yourself a chalkboard :)

Love this chalkboard! I wish I had luck at the Goodwill. Every time I go I come out empty handed :( I will bookmark your tutorial...just in case ;) Thanks!

I've heard WATER is the answer. I haven't tried this myself yet but I think dipping the chalk in water before you write and even spraying a little on the board first too is what makes it so bright and crisp! :)

ReplyDeleteCurious to the type of chalk, too. I do find that when I wipe my board w/a wet towel, they write much better. I used spray paint, and I may have to take your advice & paint over w/the brush on. But please let us know your secret w/the chalk brand & how you get it to write so nicely! Thanks!! :)

ReplyDeleteI LOVED your chalkboard and scoured every Goodwill and garage sale in my area with no luck ... Then, my hubby and I decided to take on our very first DIY project together. A quick trip to Home Depot, a couple 2x4's, plywood, and chalkboard paint later, and TADA!! A beautiful chalkboard! Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Hi! I found your blog when searching how to make a chalkboard, and I love reading about you. I am thinking of even starting a blog of my own to document my pregnancy :) I showed my Mom your chalkboard tutorial, and I was set out to make it over the weekend. My Mom suggested buying a sheet of wood at Home Depot, painting it with chalkboard paint, and using trim to frame it. What do you know? Home Depot actually sells a sheet of wood WITH a chalkboard backing! We just painted and cut the trim, and glued it on :) Just wanted to share with others in case they cannot find a large enough frame at a goodwill etc. Thanks for the idea :)

DeleteLittle Baby Garvin also inspired me to start my own blog to document my pregnancy. I actually did the same thing your mom suggested! I did not have much luck at my local goodwill stores or even at any garage sales so I went to home depot and made my board from scratch and I think it looks just as good! I used a hard tempboard that only cost me $4.97. It takes just a little bit more time but is totally worth it in the end :)

I saw your chalkboard post a while back and have since been checking Goodwill for the perfect frame every chance i get. Finally i found one. I finally made my own message chalkboard! I had been looking for a frame as well, no luck. Instead, bought an old cabinet door for $4 and used it! I've been following your story since the pregnancy so its been a long time comin.
